An ambitious multi-campus, multi-faculty, mid-sized University based in Cheltenham and Gloucester with a focus on excellent teaching and research with impact. We are engaged in the process of developing a new strategy to support our ambitious growth plans, which includes the recent purchase of the iconic old Debenhams department store in Gloucester. The Council is the University’s governing body, with 20 members in total including 14 external members (i.e. drawn from outside the staff and student body). The University is a limited company and an exempt charity. Board Apprentices attend all meetings and are treated in the same way as Council Members to ensure maximum benefit is derived from the opportunity.
Board Meetings: 6 per annum Cheltenham or Gloucester x3 Teams x 3
The apprentice would be invited to attend all Board meetings / Committees
All meetings of the Council, plus the annual Away Day (a two-day residential event) and other occasional meetings as required. The University has agreed to adopt a pattern where some meetings are held on-line and some in person.
Although not a requirement, all Board Apprentices are invited to attend meetings of either the Audit & Risk Committee or Finance & General Purposes Committee. This would add up to 6 more meetings per year, the majority of which would be held in Microsoft Teams.
In addition, all Council members are invited to attend University events in order to better understand the institution. This includes, for example, public lectures and graduation ceremonies. It is hoped that Apprentices will make some effort to attend such events during the course of the year.Yes, UK travel expenses will be covered.
Applicants should have a first degree (or equivalent), and personal expertise in an area relevant to the responsibilities of Council. Such areas include:
Finance and audit
Business planning and development
Property and estates
A successful track record of leadership and achievement in their professional lives; with an understanding of the leadership and management challenges in large, complex organisations.
Applicants must have:
Ability to think and act strategically.
High levels of written and oral communication skills.
Ability to listen to others.
Local /Non-Local Resident:
Applicants need not be local residents. Applicants that are not local must be willing and able to travel to Cheltenham and Gloucester as required. In addition, University business is likely to punctuate other days, e.g. telephone conversations, preparation for meetings, e-mail correspondence, etc.
Applicants must have a strong personal commitment to higher education, a belief in the transformative power of higher education, and the ability and willingness to be ambassadors for the University.
